Action Research

Undertaking action research and pilot projects to develop methodologies for improving processes of innovation, learning, capacity development and institutional change

Action research combines research and practical work in a process that aims to improve strategies, practices and knowledge. It involves a reflective practice of progressive problem solving led by individuals, working with others in teams or as part of a community of practice, to improve the way they address issues and solve problems. One result is the creation of new bodies of practical knowledge. Organisations and communities build their adaptive capacity by becoming more reflective and analytical in their work.

Pilot projects lend themselves to action research. Existing ways of working are assessed, innovations tested and their impact reflected on. This paves the way for developing and improving technical, organisational and institutional capacities.

From practice to knowledge
CDI designs and facilitates action research and pilot projects together with partners. Building the capacities of the different actors and users in these processes is an important element. We often collaborate with other units of Wageningen UR, making knowledge and research available and feeding practice into knowledge creation.

Action Research in Practice  Examples

Value Chains (DGIS-WUR partnership)

In collaboration with other Wageningen UR units, CDI conducts action research on value chains. In Niger this focuses on trade hubs in the onion trade. In Rwanda action research looks at agri-business clusters, in particular cassava and local processing units. In both countries the research is linked to the multi-stakeholder processes of Agri-ProFocus.
Introduction of EU Standards and Methods for Habitat Identification and Classification (Ukraine)

This pilot project aims to increase capacities for identifying and managing habitats in accordance with EU standards. CDI works in close cooperation with Ukrainian government and NGO representatives. Besides giving technical training to experts, it advises on how the introduction of European standards will affect Ukrainian organisations and institutions.
