Adaptation and mitigation as institutional change processes
The impact on food production, food security and natural resources in developing countries by climate change is likely to be severe. At different levels and scales appropriate adaptation and mitigation responses are needed. Climate change adaptation and mitigation are placed within the context of sustainable development and involve complex change processes. These require the involvement of different stakeholders such as policy makers, scientists, communities, citizens, farmers, extension workers, media, businesses, etc. Since climate change is highly complex and uncertain, an emergent and learning process is required. The adaptation and mitigation measures will involve social and institutional change. This course will enable participants to play an active role in the governance of climate change processes. It offers conceptual frameworks to understand climate change, vulnerability and adaptation and mitigation options. It builds skills to apply tools for stakeholder engagement, policy influencing, advocacy and negotiation. The course includes practical field work and development of individual action plans.
